As a Designer from Indonesia, how does it feel to be in HK as a Designer?
Designer Ika Butoni: I started my career in Hong Kong, so it’s only natural that I feel a stronger connection to Hong Kong, as a designer.
What is your new collection about?
Designer Ika Butoni: I am delighted to proudly present my latest collection: SS 2026 Cross Culture, which celebrates the rich fusion of diverse styles.
How would you describe your techniques, which create the lovely patterns?
Designer Ika Butoni: This collection will be prominently featuring two exquisite techniques: Shibori and Eco Print, each bringing a unique artistic touch to the designs.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a fashion designer, and how did you overcome them?
Designer Ika Butoni: No challenges, I have pure love and passion for designing and creating new things that constantly make my energy surge and inspire me to keep pushing forward.
As a Founder, what triggered you to start Bali Fashion Week?
Designer Ika Butoni:
In 1998, the Indonesian economy was in shambles, marked by the rapid changes of four presidents and widespread uncertainty. During this turbulent period, the Chinese community faced horrific acts of violence, including rape, murder, and the looting of their belongings, as blame was unfairly directed towards them. Encouraged and supported by advice from the international media, who stood by my side, I took the bold step to launch Bali Fashion Week, aiming to bring creativity and hope amidst the chaos.
As a Founder of Bali Fashion Week, do you believe Hong Kong fashion shows benefit Fashion designers who are taking part?
Designer Ika Butoni: It depends on the brand; however, when it comes to Ika Butoni, the answer is definitely a no.
Is there something you'd like to share with your audience?
Designer Ika Butoni: I love to share with my audience that I am continuously creating pieces that I truly love, without worrying about whether my collection will immediately appeal to any particular audience. This authentic approach is precisely why I succeeded in selling to 40 countries around the world from 1990 to 2012. Buyers discovered something unique and fresh in my work—distinctive yet highly marketable, setting my collections apart on the global stage.
If you could advise your junior self on something, what would that be?
Designer Ika Butoni: Fashion is a tough and highly competitive world, demanding constant creativity and resilience.
1. Apart from possessing immense creativity, you also need to have a strong sense of business acumen.
2. You have to have enough capital to effectively support and sustain your business operations.
3. You need to have reliable partners who can effectively manage areas such as Marketing, Production, and other essential business functions.
