Victor Chan is a renowned Hong Kong-based designer whose work embodies a masterful fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design innovation. With a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and detail, Chan’s creations artfully merge traditional Asian motifs with contemporary fashion sensibilities. So, first of all, thank you very much for having us here today. It was truly an absolute pleasure to witness such an amazing and spectacular show. Our curiosity is piqued.
What initially drew you to the world of fashion and Design?
Victor Chan: It all began with my drawing classes when I was young. I was learning Japanese comic drawing, where I had the opportunity to explore how to draw human figures in various characters and distinct looks. Through this creative process, I gradually developed a deepening interest in designing clothing and crafting unique images, which eventually inspired my path toward fashion styling and creative direction.
2. Can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a fashion
designer for luxury womenswear?
Victor Chan: Growing up reading all sorts of iconic fashion magazines, reference books. Each of the
incredibly artistic fashion images, editorials, and styling work inspired me so much that I would really want to part of this and create my own world.
3. How would you describe your design style in a few words?
Victor Chan: I would describe it as Sophisticated, Empowering, and remarkably Sharp, embodying a sense of polished elegance and confident strength that truly stands out.
4. How is your upcoming collection different from your Midnight Moon series from Centerstage 2024?
Victor Chan: The upcoming collection is named “The Sweet Escape”, which is a nice contrast from last year’s collection Dancing in the Moonlight”.
It is uplifting, brighter, and refreshingly new, while still maintaining a subtle elegance that preserves the glamorous touch just as always. This collection offers a true and refreshing escape from the previous collection, bringing a renewed sense of sophistication and charm.
5. Is there something you like your audience to know about the upcoming collection series?
Victor Chan: The upcoming collection places a strong emphasis on sleeve designs and intricate manipulation techniques, showcasing a variety of innovative styles. Additionally, it introduces fun and playful fabric materials, which I absolutely adore and have thoughtfully incorporated throughout the pieces.
6. Could you tell me what inspired you to create these stunning designs ?
Victor Chan: I am often inspired by a story or narrative that I have created for myself. It could be a particular mood I felt at that moment or the experiences I have been involved in during a specific period. Sometimes, these inspirations are deeply personal, but I find great joy in expressing these emotions and warmth through the art of fashion design. This process allows me to connect with my inner world and share it visually with others.
7. How do you balance artistic expression with commercial viability?
Victor Chan: I believe that when you truly and passionately believe in your aesthetic and invest deeply in it, your body of work will naturally speak much louder than any words ever could. This authentic expression is precisely what captures the attention of those around you—whether it’s your peers, the industry at large, or your target client base. It’s this genuine connection through your creative vision that sets you apart. Finding this balance between staying true to your artistic identity and engaging with the commercial side is essential for sustaining a successful and meaningful career.
8. Is there any upcoming project that you are excited about?
Victor Chan: Always a pleasure to connect with lovely clients with their custom orders; this is the type of project I would never get bored with. Also, a custom stage costume project is coming up that I am very excited about.
9. Are there any new trends or innovations you’re particularly interested in exploring?
Victor Chan: I am always interested in draping and fabric manipulation. And I am eager to keep exploring the possibilities by using different newfound materials or even in scales and volumes, hopefully, that will carry on in the future collections.
10. Is there any advice you have for upcoming aspiring fashion designers ?
Victor Chan: Be your authentic self at all times. Embrace confidence in your unique voice and perspective.
Avoid comparing yourself too often to others, and always have faith in your own personal journey and growth.
